The Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN) has restored the Benin–Egbin 330kV transmission line following a power disruption that affected Lagos and surrounding areas on Thursday, while efforts continue to reinstate the Benin–Omotoso 330kV transmission line.
In a statement issued by its General Manager, Public Affairs, Ndidi Mbah, TCN said the incident occurred at about 8:19 a.m. when the national grid experienced voltage instability that quickly spread across the Lagos power corridor.
According to the company, the disturbance led to the loss of some generating stations, transmission line outages and a temporary interruption of electricity supply to Lagos and its environs.
To prevent a wider grid disturbance, the National Control Centre immediately directed several power generation companies to reduce their output, helping to stabilise system frequency and contain the disruption.
The statement added that the Minister of Power, Chief Joseph Tegbe, convened an emergency meeting with the leadership of TCN and the Nigerian Independent System Operator (NISO) shortly after receiving reports of the incident. The meeting focused on coordinating urgent restoration efforts and developing measures to prevent similar occurrences.
TCN confirmed that the Benin–Egbin 330kV transmission line has been successfully restored and is now transmitting bulk electricity. However, engineers from its Benin and Omotoso sub-regions are continuing work to clear the remaining faults on the Benin–Omotoso 330kV line to ensure full restoration of power supply to the Lagos complex.
The company apologised to residents, businesses and electricity consumers affected by the outage, assuring them that all relevant agencies are working to restore normal bulk power transmission as quickly as possible.
TCN said its long-term objective remains the stabilisation and strengthening of the national grid to minimise the recurrence of such incidents. It appealed to affected consumers for patience, promising to provide further updates as restoration work progresses.
