Nigeria to Unveil $1bn Renewed Hope Social Protection Programme

The Federal Government is set to unveil the $1 billion Renewed Hope Social Protection Programme as part of renewed efforts to strengthen Nigeria’s social protection system, reduce poverty and promote economic inclusion.
The programme will be unveiled on Wednesday, August 26, 2026, at the Banquet Hall of the Presidential Villa, Abuja, by the First Lady of Nigeria, Senator Oluremi Tinubu, CON.
The initiative is being implemented under the Renewed Hope Agenda of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu through the Federal Ministry of Humanitarian Affairs and Poverty Reduction, headed by the Minister, Dr. Bernard M. Doro.
According to the ministry, the programme represents a major shift towards a more integrated, household-centred and results-driven approach to social protection, with emphasis on improving the lives and livelihoods of poor and vulnerable Nigerians.
It said the new framework would strengthen Nigeria’s social protection delivery architecture while expanding interventions targeted at vulnerable households and ensuring that government support translates into sustainable improvements in beneficiaries’ welfare.
A major component of the programme is the One Humanitarian One Poverty Response System (OHOPRS), an integrated national architecture designed to connect humanitarian response, social protection, poverty reduction, economic inclusion and graduation initiatives around the household.
The strategic proposition of OHOPRS is: “One System, From Vulnerability to Prosperity.”
The ministry said the system would also provide a framework for articulating its strategic priorities, institutional reforms, programmes, delivery mechanisms and implementation pathways in the areas of humanitarian affairs and poverty reduction.
As part of the initiative, the Federal Government will launch an Emergency Cash Transfer programme targeting 7.6 million vulnerable households to provide timely assistance to families facing socioeconomic vulnerabilities and shocks.
The event will also feature the launch of Humanity First Magazine, a strategic communication and knowledge platform designed to showcase government interventions, results, partnerships, human-impact stories and innovations across Nigeria’s humanitarian and poverty-reduction ecosystem.
The ministry said the programme would further strengthen collaboration between the Office of the First Lady and the Federal Ministry of Humanitarian Affairs and Poverty Reduction to ensure that vulnerable households are safe, secure, protected and empowered, while being progressively linked to pathways towards economic prosperity.
It described the Renewed Hope Social Protection Programme as a significant step towards building a more coordinated, responsive and results-oriented social protection system that places vulnerable Nigerians at the centre of national development efforts.
The ministry said the initiative underscores the Federal Government’s renewed commitment to using social protection as a tool for poverty reduction, resilience-building and inclusive economic development.
Signed by the Director, Information and Public Relations, Mrs. Janet McDickson Noah, the statement said the unveiling would mark a new phase in Nigeria’s efforts to strengthen social protection and improve outcomes for vulnerable households across the country.
