The Nigerian Independent System Operator (NISO), has convened a high-level stakeholder engagement to address operational irregularities threatening the stability of the nation’s electricity grid along the Ikorodu–Sagamu 132kV double-circuit transmission corridor.
The meeting, held on Tuesday, May 5, 2025, at the NISO Regional Office in Ikeja West, Lagos, brought together key players in the Nigerian Electricity Supply Industry (NESI), including the Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission (NERC), Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN), Generation Companies, Distribution Companies, and Eligible Customers.
Speaking at the session, NISO Managing Director/Chief Executive Officer, Engr. Abdu Bello Mohammed, described the engagement as a decisive intervention aimed at tackling critical issues such as offtake indiscipline, metering discrepancies, and gaps in energy accountability identified along the corridor.
He warned that the anomalies pose significant system-wide risks, with far-reaching implications for grid stability, operational efficiency, and market integrity.
“This is not a routine meeting. It is a strategic intervention to safeguard the national grid and restore confidence in the electricity market,” Mohammed stated.
According to him, the engagement focused on presenting verified findings from ongoing investigations, aligning stakeholders on the scale of the issues, and reinforcing compliance with statutory frameworks, including the Electricity Act 2023, Grid Code, Market Rules, Metering Code, and the Eligible Customer Regulations 2024.
Participants were also tasked with agreeing on immediate and enforceable corrective measures to restore operational discipline and metering accuracy, while establishing clear compliance timelines and accountability mechanisms.
Mohammed emphasized that maintaining strict discipline and transparency across all market participants remains critical to the sustainability of Nigeria’s power sector.
“Any breach in compliance puts the entire system at risk. All stakeholders must act decisively to protect the integrity of the grid,” he added.
The engagement forms part of NISO’s broader strategy to strengthen system governance, enhance operational accountability, and ensure reliable electricity supply nationwide. My
