WORLD ENVIRONMENT DAY 2022: NIEE Abuja Chapter Marks Day, Awards Ambassadors. ….. All groups must take Action to safe the Earth- Engr Elesa

The World Environment Day is a vehicle for encouraging awareness and action for the protection of the environment
which was instituted by the United Nations  on June 5, 1972 with the slogan ‘Only One Earth”, has on Jubilee celebration has the the same slogan, this year 2022.
Delivering her remark, the Chairman, NIgeria Institute of Environmental Engineers, (NIEE), Abuja Chapter; a division of the NIgerian Society of Engineers, Engr. Lynda Bitrus Elesa MNSE, FNIEE, called on citizens in the society to take action to transform how we consume and manage the Earth and it’s resources. She further said that this will help transform our economies and societies to be more inclusive, fair, and connected with nature.

“We must shift from harming the planet to healing it. Only One Earth calls for transformative changes to policies and choices to enable cleaner, greener, and sustainable living in harmony with nature. This planet is our only home, and humanity must safeguard its finite resources.

“This year, Stockholm, in Sweden welcomed the world again from the 2″ – 3″ June 2022 for “Stockholm+50: a healthy planet for the prosperity ofall — our responsibility, our opportunity’. The event provided leaders with an opportunity to draw up multilateral environmental action to achieve the bold and urgent action needed to secure a better future on a healthy planet” she stated.

The Chairman noted that the World Environmental Day instituted by the United Nations through United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP), serves as a reminder to humans’ that they are not alone on this planet, adding that over the years, it has grown to be the largest global platform for environmental public outreach and is celebrated by millions of people across the world (of which we are all a part of it.

“This day constantly brings to mind the fact that there is a huge biological ecosystem that exists and human’s survival is dependent on it, we become more aware of the problems facing our environment such as air pollution, plastic pollution, sea levels increase, and food insecurity, among others.

This year marks the 5O years anniversary celebration of the United Nations World Environment Day, and our reliance on this beautiful blue | planet as well as the stresses we place upon it are more evident than ever. Hence, the Adoption of “Only One Earth’ as the theme of the Day with the focus on Living Sustainably in Harmony with Nature’, to emphasize that time to bring people and nature back into balance is running out Over the years we have observed that humans have achieved an unprecedented power to transform their environment with majorimpacts on human well-being and economic development”, she said.

In his paper presentation themed, ” Transformative Environmental Change Through Sustainable And Greener Lifestyle”, Sanitarian Isah Adamu, Senior Technical Assistant to the Registrar, Environmental Health Officers Registration Council of NIgeria (EHORECON), harped on management and reusability of domestic materials, resources and energy like water, electricity, plastics, papers. He also emphasised on consumption of organic products in order to keep healthy.

Highlight of the event was awards of Green Ambassadors to five recepients. They are; Engr A. B. Abdumalk, Engr Oladipo Isiaka Mobogaje Engr. Halimat S. C. Adediran and Ambassador of Environment Award was given to Chief Kelvin Chinedu Ayogu.

Others are, Skytech Solar & Energy Limited and Tasha Energy & Engineering Services Limited that received the Corporate Sustainability Award respectively.

Also, Award of Excellence to Engr. Uche Patrick- Obikile, the Abuja branch NIEE Assistant Secretary General and Planning Committee Chairman, NIEE 2022 World Environmental Day Celebration.
