The Transmission Company of Nigeria has commissioned a new 300MVA 330/132kV power transformer at its Katampe 330/132/33kV Transmission Substation in Abuja, in a move aimed at boosting electricity supply and strengthening grid stability in the Federal Capital Territory and surrounding areas.

The transformer was officially commissioned on Sunday, May 24, 2026, increasing the substation’s installed capacity from 450MVA to 750MVA.
According to TCN, the upgrade provides additional bulk power capacity for the Abuja Electricity Distribution Company to offtake and distribute to consumers across Abuja and neighbouring communities.

Speaking during the commissioning ceremony, the General Manager (Transmission), Abuja Region, Engr. Musa Shuaibu, said the installation and successful energisation of the transformer reflects TCN’s commitment to expanding the nation’s transmission infrastructure to meet growing electricity demand.

He noted that the project would improve power delivery, enhance grid reliability, and strengthen electricity supply to distribution load centres nationwide.
The project was executed under the TCN-World Bank collaborative initiative, part of ongoing efforts to rehabilitate and expand Nigeria’s transmission network to support improved power sector performance.

The commissioning forms part of TCN’s broader strategy to reinforce critical transmission infrastructure and improve the efficiency of bulk electricity transmission across the country.

The statement was signed by Ndidi Mbah, General Manager, Public Affairs, TCN.
