The National Sports Commission (NSC) and the Federal Ministry of Finance have moved to conclude the payment process for the Presidential rewards approved for Nigeria’s senior women’s football and basketball teams, the Super Falcons and D’Tigress.
The development followed a meeting between the Chairman of the NSC, Mallam Shehu Dikko, and the Minister of Finance and Coordinating Minister of the Economy, Taiwo Oyedele.
A key issue discussed was the status of the cash component of the Presidential rewards approved by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for the players and officials of both teams.
The rewards are in recognition of the teams’ outstanding performances on the international stage in 2025, with the Super Falcons winning the Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON) title in Morocco, while D’Tigress retained the Women’s AfroBasket championship in Côte d’Ivoire.
Oyedele confirmed that the Ministry of Finance had completed payment for the three-bedroom flats in Abuja acquired by the Federal Government and presented to the players and officials.
He further assured that the process for the cash rewards, which constitutes the next stage, would be concluded immediately, adding that the beneficiaries would begin receiving alerts from the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) into their individual accounts in line with the President’s approvals and directives.
The NSC stated that the players and officials had already received title documents for the three-bedroom flats, as well as Certificates of National Honours of Officer of the Order of Niger (OON), duly endorsed by the President.
Dikko reaffirmed the Commission’s commitment to ensuring that the Presidential rewards and other commitments made to the teams are fully implemented through due process.
The NSC Director of Information and Public Relations, Dr. (Mrs.) Kehinde Ajayi, said the latest development represented a significant step towards completing the reward process for the two national teams.
