The Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NiMet) has predicted widespread thunderstorms and moderate rainfall across most parts of the country from Monday, June 29 to Wednesday, July 1, 2026, urging residents to take necessary precautions against severe weather conditions.

According to the agency’s three-day weather outlook issued by its Central Forecast Office on Sunday, northern states including Borno, Yobe, Adamawa, Jigawa, Bauchi, Taraba, Kebbi, Kano, Zamfara, Katsina and Kaduna are expected to experience morning thunderstorms and moderate rainfall on Monday, with the wet conditions continuing into the afternoon and evening in several states, while other areas will enjoy sunny skies.

In the North Central region, cloudy conditions are expected on Monday, with isolated morning thunderstorms and light rainfall over the Federal Capital Territory, Nasarawa, Niger and Plateau states before moderate rainfall spreads across the region later in the day.

Southern states are forecast to witness morning thunderstorms and light rains over Ebonyi, Anambra, Abia, Imo, Ondo, Ogun, Edo, Lagos, Rivers, Delta, Bayelsa, Cross River, Akwa Ibom and Enugu, followed by widespread moderate rainfall across the region during the afternoon and evening.

For Tuesday, NiMet said patches of clouds will dominate the northern region, with thunderstorms and moderate rainfall expected in parts of Sokoto, Katsina, Zamfara, Kaduna, Borno and Adamawa in the morning, extending to Bauchi, Kano, Kebbi and Taraba later in the day.

The North Central and Southern regions are also expected to experience cloudy skies with morning showers in isolated locations before moderate rainfall becomes widespread during the afternoon and evening.

By Wednesday, sunny intervals with patches of clouds are anticipated across the North, although isolated morning thunderstorms are expected in Adamawa, Taraba, Sokoto and Kebbi before moderate rainfall spreads across the region later in the day.

The North Central region is expected to experience morning thunderstorms over parts of Benue State, while the South will see early rains in Cross River, Lagos, Delta, Akwa Ibom and Rivers before moderate rainfall extends across the region.

NiMet warned that strong winds may precede thunderstorms and advised residents to secure loose objects, avoid driving during heavy rainfall, disconnect electrical appliances during storms, and stay away from tall trees to reduce the risk of injury from falling branches.

The agency also urged airline operators to obtain airport-specific weather reports for operational planning and encouraged Nigerians to monitor regular weather updates through NiMet’s official channels.
