Nigeria Mourns China Over Floods, Landslides That Claimed Over 500 Lives

The Federal Government of Nigeria has expressed profound condolences to the Government and people of the People’s Republic of China following devastating floods and landslides along the China-Nepal border that have claimed more than 500 lives.
The disaster, which occurred on August 26, 2026, caused extensive destruction in areas including Gyirong County in China’s Tibet Autonomous Region, leaving hundreds injured and displacing communities.
In a statement issued on Friday by the Spokesperson of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Oluwafemi Adeniyi, Nigeria said it was deeply saddened by the loss of lives involving Chinese and Nepali nationals, as well as tourists from Australia, India, Malaysia, the United Kingdom and the United States, among others.
The Federal Government extended its condolences to bereaved families and expressed sympathy with the injured, displaced persons and communities whose homes and livelihoods were severely affected by the disaster.
Nigeria also commended the Chinese authorities for their prompt emergency response under the leadership of President Xi Jinping, particularly ongoing efforts to rescue survivors, provide humanitarian assistance and support affected communities.
The government further praised Chinese first responders and rescue teams for what it described as their courage, selflessness and tireless efforts to save lives and assist victims.
According to the statement, Nigeria remains hopeful that the resilience and collective strength demonstrated in the rescue and recovery operations will help affected communities overcome the tragedy and rebuild.
“May the souls of those who have lost their lives rest in peace, and may the injured and affected families find strength, comfort, and hope as recovery and reconstruction efforts continue,” the statement said.
