Nigeria’s New High Commissioner to Australia Presents Credentials, Seeks Stronger Bilateral Ties

Nigeria’s High Commissioner to Australia, Olufemi Olusegun Pedro, has formally presented his Letter of Credence to Sam Mostyn, marking the official commencement of his diplomatic duties in the Commonwealth of Australia.

According to a statement issued by the  Ministry of Foreign Affairs Spokesperson, Mr Kimiebi Imomotimi Ebienfa, Ambassador Pedro presented his credentials to the Governor-General on Tuesday, June 23, 2026, during a ceremony held at Government House in Canberra.

The High Commissioner was accompanied by senior officials of the Nigerian High Commission, including Mr Abba Mustapha, Minister Counsellor; Mr Paul C., First Secretary; and Mrs Aminat Adeola, First Secretary and Head of Chancery.

Upon arrival at Government House, Ambassador Pedro inspected a guard of honour before proceeding to the credential presentation ceremony, where he formally handed over his credentials to the Governor-General.

Following the ceremony, the Nigerian envoy held discussions with Governor-General Mostyn on issues of mutual interest aimed at strengthening bilateral relations between Nigeria and Australia.
During the meeting, Ambassador Pedro advocated the establishment of a Nigeria-Australia Business Council to enhance trade and investment opportunities between the two countries. He also called for greater collaboration in vocational education, highlighting its importance in skills development and economic growth.

The presentation of credentials officially empowers Ambassador Pedro to represent Nigeria in Australia and advance diplomatic, economic and educational cooperation between both nations.

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs said the engagement reflects Nigeria’s commitment to deepening its longstanding relations with Australia and exploring new areas of partnership for mutual benefit.
