Nigeria Mourns Algeria Over Fatal Road Crash That Claimed 27 Lives

The Federal Government of Nigeria has expressed deep sorrow over the tragic road accident in Algeria that claimed 27 lives and left more than 40 others injured.
In a statement issued on Sunday by the Spokesperson of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Kimiebi Imomotimi Ebienfa, Nigeria extended its heartfelt condolences and solidarity to the Government and people of Algeria following the devastating bus crash that occurred in Boumerdès Province on Friday, July 31, 2026.
According to the statement, the accident occurred near El Karma as the bus was travelling from Sétif to Algiers. Nigeria also sympathised with Algeria over the declaration of three days of national mourning by President Abdelmadjid Tebboune in honour of the victims.
The Ministry stated that the Government and people of Nigeria stand in solidarity with Algeria during this period of national grief, extending sincere condolences to the bereaved families and praying for the peaceful repose of the souls of those who lost their lives.
Nigeria also wished those injured in the accident a speedy and full recovery, expressing confidence in the resilience of the Algerian people as they mourn the tragic loss.
About the Accident in Algeria
The latest reports indicate that 27 people were killed and 42 others injured in a tragic passenger bus accident that occurred on Friday, 31 July 2026, in Boumerdès Province, about 50 kilometres east of Algiers, Algeria. The bus, travelling from Sétif to Algiers, reportedly veered off the road and plunged into a ravine. The cause of the crash is still under investigation.
The accident prompted a massive emergency response, with rescue teams evacuating survivors to nearby hospitals. Following the tragedy, Algerian President Abdelmadjid Tebboune declared three days of national mourning and extended condolences to the families of the victims.
