The Acting Ambassador of the Republic of Italy to Nigeria, Mr. Iacopo Foti, on Sunday hosted a reception in Abuja to mark the 79th anniversary of la Festa della Repubblica, Italy’s National Day.
The event brought together top officials from the Nigerian government, members of the diplomatic corps, business leaders, representatives of international organizations, and members of both the Nigerian and Italian communities.
In his remarks, Mr. Foti described the occasion as a moment to reflect not only on Italy’s democratic values, but also on the enduring relationship between Italy and Nigeria.
He noted that the two countries have enjoyed strong diplomatic ties since February 20, 1960, and continue to collaborate in areas such as trade, innovation, education, culture, and migration.
“Tonight, we are not only celebrating Italy, but also the friendship and growing partnership between our two countries,” Foti said.
The envoy acknowledged the contributions of Italians living in Nigeria, many of whom have played vital roles in the country’s development since the 1970s, particularly in construction, manufacturing, food, fashion, and design. He commended them for being “ambassadors of Italian values” and praised their successful integration into Nigerian society.
Foti also expressed appreciation for the Nigerian people, describing them as hardworking, entrepreneurial, and welcoming. He noted that Italy and Nigeria share several social and cultural similarities, including strong family values, community life, creativity, and a thriving fashion and film industry.
“Nigeria has the potential to become a cultural superpower,” he said, adding that Italy looks forward to expanding academic and cultural exchanges between the two nations.
He referenced Nigerian author Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie’s views on the dangers of stereotypes, calling for a broader and more nuanced understanding of both nations. “Italy and Nigeria deserve more than a single story,” he said.
Foti reaffirmed Italy’s commitment to working with Nigeria on global challenges including climate change, peace and security, and migration. Both countries are signatories to the Paris Agreement and maintain active diplomatic engagement on multilateral issues.
He concluded with a toast to the continued friendship between the two nations and thanked the Nigerian government for its ongoing support to the Italian mission and citizens in the country.
“Let tonight be a symbol of what is possible when nations collaborate in mutual respect,” he said. “Long live the friendship between Italy and Nigeria.”
