INEC to Support Jamb with Biometric Machines to Boost Creditable Exams

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has offered to support the Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB) with its biometric verification technology as part of efforts to strengthen collaboration between the two federal agencies.
The offer followed a courtesy visit by the JAMB Registrar, Prof. Segun Aina, and members of his management team to INEC headquarters in Abuja on Friday, September 4, 2026.
Prof. Aina said JAMB approached INEC because of the Commission’s experience in biometric verification, noting that the Board was seeking to further enhance the integrity and credibility of its examination processes.
He disclosed that JAMB was aware that INEC had some biometric verification machines that might no longer be in active use and appealed to the Commission to consider making the equipment available to the Board.
Receiving the delegation, INEC Chairman, Prof. Joash Amupitan, SAN, commended JAMB for its role in Nigeria’s educational development and described the Board as a critical institution in advancing the future of Nigerian youths.
Amupitan highlighted INEC’s recent deployment of technology in the conduct of elections, including the Anambra, Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Area Council, Ekiti and Osun governorship elections, as well as bye-elections across the country.
He said the credibility and peaceful conduct of the elections had attracted commendation from observers, including the Office of the National Security Adviser and the United Kingdom High Commission.
The INEC Chairman consequently directed the Commission’s Director of Information and Communications Technology (ICT) to review JAMB’s request and conduct a proof-of-concept assessment to determine the availability and suitability of the biometric equipment for possible deployment by JAMB.
He described the engagement as evidence of growing synergy among government institutions, stressing that stronger inter-agency collaboration was essential to advancing national development.
Amupitan also assured the JAMB delegation that INEC remained willing to explore other areas of cooperation with the Board.
Prof. Aina expressed appreciation to the INEC Chairman and management for the warm reception accorded his delegation.
