INDONESIA MARKS 75 YEARS OF INDEPENDENCE

Indonesian Embassy in Nigeria celebrated the 75 years independence of the country on Monday, August 17, 2020.

The event themed ‘Maju’ which was marked low key due to the Covid-19 pandemic, also celebrated bilateral relationship between Nigerian and Indonesia.

Speaking during the event, Amb.Usra Hendra Harahap noted that the relationship between Indonesia and Nigeria which began 10 years before the establishment of their bilateral relationship in 1965, has seen the establishment of various memorandum of understanding ranging from education to agriculture as they also hope to collaborate in the area of security.

“The relationship is getting stronger and touches upon areas of cooperation in different fields from politics, economy, defence, and socio-culture. In our efforts to do that, both countries have signed several agreements, inter alia, the MOUs on joint commission for bilateral cooperation as well as other MOUs on education, agriculture, and sociocultural.

“Soon we hope that agreement between the ministries of defence of both countries can be signed as we understand that collaboration on strategic industries and information exchange for security issues are priorities at times like this”, he noted.

The Ambassador stated that the Indonesian government is constantly seeking better and more effective ways to collaborate with Nigeria.

He went further to speak on the Covid-19 pandemic and its effect on the relationship of both country, revealing that strategies were being put in place to ensure that the two countries can partner even in the global health crisis.

“Challenges for us now is how both countries could use this covid-19 momentum as an opportunity to work closer in bringing about the development and prosperity for people of both countries.

“Nigeria is a big market, and Indonesia with its technology and expertise can be a strategic partner in the development strategy of Nigeria. The challenge is now on how we could formulate the right model of cooperation on the level of B to B as well as G to G that can be beneficial for both countries,” the ambassador stated.

August 17th every year is set aside by the people of Indonesia to celebrate their independence which they got on August 17, 1945.
