Enugu City International Marathon: 48 Hours to Go as Coal City Prepares for Global Spotlight

Excitement is building across Enugu as the Coal City prepares to host the Enugu City International Marathon on Friday, August 28, 2026, in what promises to be a major celebration of sport, tourism, culture and enterprise.
With just 48 hours to the race, preparations have entered their final phase, as athletes, organisers, sponsors, volunteers and residents gear up for an event expected to place Enugu firmly on the international athletics map.
The Marathon Expo is already underway, with participants collecting race kits while brands and partners activate their programmes across the city. Visitors and athletes are also arriving in increasing numbers ahead of race day.
Organisers said all critical arrangements are in place, including route certification, medical services, security, logistics, timing systems and broadcast infrastructure.
Major media organisations, including Arise TV, Channels Television and AIT, are expected to provide extensive coverage, while the International Conference Centre serves as the official World Press Centre.
A World Press Conference is scheduled for 10 a.m. on Thursday at the International Conference Centre, where organisers, partners and elite athletes will brief journalists on the final preparations for the marathon.
The Local Organising Committee described the event as a demonstration of what a Nigerian city can achieve through careful planning, partnership and determination.
Beyond athletics, the marathon is projected to generate economic opportunities for hotels, restaurants, transport operators, vendors and other small businesses, while promoting Enugu as a destination for tourism, investment and sporting activities.
The race will also provide an opportunity for residents and visitors to experience some of the city’s landmarks and communities as thousands of runners take to the streets.
From professional athletes pursuing competitive times and prize money to amateur runners, students, volunteers and community participants, the marathon is expected to bring people from diverse backgrounds together in a shared celebration of fitness and civic pride.
Residents are encouraged to visit the Marathon Expo, support runners along the designated route and follow the event through the various broadcast and media platforms.
With the final preparations underway, Enugu is ready to move as one city.
