Defence Minister Bags Rare NIS Honorary Fellowship, Sets Historic Milestone

Abuja, May 5, 2026 — The Ministry of Defence has announced the conferment of a prestigious Honorary Fellowship on the Honourable Minister of Defence, Christopher Gwabin Musa (rtd), by the Nigerian Institution of Surveyors, describing it as a historic milestone.

The distinguished honour was presented on May 4, 2026, during a ceremony held at Ship House, the Ministry’s headquarters in Abuja. The award recognises General Musa’s outstanding leadership, dedicated service, and notable contributions to strengthening Nigeria’s national security architecture.
According to the NIS, the ceremony—initially scheduled for December 2025—was brought forward due to pressing service demands, ensuring timely recognition of the Minister’s exceptional performance.
“This marks only the second time in the history of the Nigerian Institution of Surveyors that such a rare distinction has been conferred,” the institute noted, underscoring the exceptional nature of the honour.

The Ministry described the recognition as a testament to General Musa’s professionalism, unwavering commitment, and the collective sacrifices of the Armed Forces of Nigeria in safeguarding the nation’s territorial integrity and supporting national development.

It also reaffirmed its commitment to deepening collaboration with professional bodies like the NIS, acknowledging their critical role in national growth and infrastructure development.

Founded in 1934 as the Licensed Surveyors Association under the leadership of nationalist Herbert Heelas Macaulay, the NIS has evolved into one of Nigeria’s oldest professional institutions, playing a key role in land administration and development planning.
