Former Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), Professor Mahmood Yakubu, has formally begun a new chapter in public service after arriving in Doha to assume office as Nigeria’s Ambassador to Qatar.

Yakubu, who completed his tenure as Nigeria’s chief election administrator last year, was received on arrival at Hamad International Airport on Wednesday by Ambassador Ibrahim Yousif Abdullah Fakhro, Director of Protocol at Qatar’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

The reception reflected the significance attached to his appointment, with 13 African ambassadors, Secretary-General of the Gas Exporting Countries Forum (GECF), Dr. Philip Mshelbila, and President of the Nigerians in Diaspora Organisation (NIDO) Qatar, Michael Ndukaihe Ihekwaba, among those present to welcome him.

His appointment comes at a time when Nigeria is seeking to deepen economic and diplomatic engagement with the Gulf region, particularly in areas of energy, investment, trade and infrastructure development.

As ambassador, Yakubu is expected to play a pivotal role in strengthening bilateral relations between Abuja and Doha, while advancing Nigeria’s economic diplomacy agenda under President Bola Tinubu’s administration.
Analysts say his immediate priorities will include attracting Qatari investments into Nigeria’s key sectors, promoting cooperation in the gas industry, enhancing diaspora engagement, and supporting regional peace and security initiatives.

With Qatar emerging as a major global investor and diplomatic actor, Yakubu’s posting places him at the centre of efforts to secure strategic partnerships capable of boosting Nigeria’s economic diversification and international influence.

The former electoral chief’s transition from managing Nigeria’s elections to representing the country in one of the Gulf’s most influential capitals signals a significant shift in his public service career and underscores the growing importance of Nigeria-Qatar relations.
