The Nigerian Airspace Management Agency (NAMA), has deployed a Mobile Control Tower at the Murtala Mohammed International Airport (MMIA), Lagos, following a recent fire outbreak that disrupted key air-ground communication systems at the airport’s old terminal.
During an inspection of the facility, NAMA’s Director of Safety Electronics and Engineering Services, Terese Ihenacho, described the intervention as a critical step in maintaining uninterrupted air navigation services at Nigeria’s busiest airport.
She confirmed that the mobile tower is fully operational, with all system tests completed, and air traffic controllers on standby to commence operations immediately.
According to her, the facility has been locally adapted to suit Nigeria’s aviation environment, incorporating innovative upgrades such as a hybrid system that combines smart digital strips with conventional manual processes for enhanced efficiency and safety.
Ihenacho added that the deployment reflects NAMA’s broader strategy to strengthen operational resilience, especially during emergencies or infrastructure disruptions. She noted that connectivity has been significantly improved, with seamless integration into Centrex and TRACON systems—an upgrade she said aligns with global aviation standards.
As part of efforts to reinforce safety and operational redundancy, NAMA is also finalising plans to deploy an additional Mobile Control Tower to service Runway 18R. The siting of the second unit will be determined in consultation with key stakeholders, including the Nigerian Civil Aviation Authority (NCAA), the Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN), and the Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NiMet).
The agency further disclosed that the mobile tower is supported by critical infrastructure such as solar-powered lighting systems, reinforced structural fittings, backup power supply, and CCTV surveillance to ensure safe and secure operations.
Ihenacho also revealed that steps are being taken to improve the working conditions and welfare of personnel operating from the temporary setup, with ongoing discussions aimed at providing essential amenities.
She praised NAMA staff for their commitment and professionalism, noting that many worked under difficult and risky conditions to restore normalcy.
The deployment, she said, underscores NAMA’s dedication to ensuring the safety, reliability, and efficiency of Nigeria’s airspace despite unforeseen challenges.
