The World Meteorological Organization (WMO), has taken a significant step towards harnessing the power of Artificial Intelligence (AI) in weather forecasting and climate monitoring. The organization’s Executive Council has agreed on an action plan to integrate AI into its infrastructure and research activities, aiming to improve weather prediction capabilities globally.

A new joint advisory group will provide oversight and guidance on AI-related activities, ensuring collaboration between public, private, and academic sectors.

WMO statement has disclosed that WMO Integrated Processing and Prediction System (WIPPS), will be incorporated into a worldwide network of operational centers that enable scientific and technological advances in meteorology.

WMO further stated that it will accelerate the rollout of the initiative, aiming to protect everyone on Earth from hazardous weather, water, or climate events through life-saving early warning systems.

The Executive Council has given its overwhelming backing to a youth action plan, promoting intergenerational collaboration and innovation and WMO will endorse future research and operational activities, including greenhouse gas monitoring, to better understand and mitigate climate change.

WMO Conference on AI for Weather Prediction will be held in Abu Dhabi from September 9-11, 2025, to unite public, private, and academic sectors and discuss the potential of AI in weather prediction.

The Congress will take place in October 2025, focusing on the Early Warnings for All initiative and AI.
