The Executive Secretary (ES) of the Nigerian Shippers Council (NSC), Barr Hassan Bello has said that the council is working towards reducing local shipping charges by 35% and noted that charges which will tied to measurable services, must be justified.
Barr Bello said this while welcoming participants to the Sub Regional Summit on unfair shipping surcharges and high local shipping charges at the ports of West and Central African Subregion holding today, in Abuja,
He revealed that 2 billion Naira has been saved already.
According to him, ” already about two billion has been saved through the confirmation of the reasonableness of demurrage”.
This he said has been achieved through ”actively engaging the shipping lines in Nigeria in a comprehensive negotiation on local shipping charges “.
The engagements and consultations were geared towards collapsing the myriad of charges to a manageable standard nomenclature, from 18 to 5.
