President Bola Tinubu has given the green light for the establishment and deployment of armed forest guards to secure 1,129 forests nationwide. This move aims to tackle terrorism, banditry, and kidnapping, which have been rampant in these areas.
The initiative is a collaborative effort between the federal and state governments, involving the recruitment, training, and equipping of thousands of young Nigerians.
The United Nations Positive Livelihood Award Centre (UN-POLAC) has hailed this development as a timely intervention in the country’s security reinforcement, aimed at protecting lives and property.
UN-POLAC’s Country President, Amb. Engr. Peter Ohagwa, has suggested including local vigilantes in the formation and providing them with vigorous training to enhance service delivery.
The Objectives and Expected Outcomes include:
-Reducing Criminality as the deployment of armed forest guards is expected to drastically reduce criminal activities, including kidnapping, in boundary forests across the federation.
-Safe Environment as the initiative aims to provide a safe environment for farmers and create jobs for teeming youths.
Amb. Ohagwa has urged the Office of the National Security Adviser and the Federal Ministry of Environment to be proactive in implementing the initiative.
