The Executive Chairman of the Federal Character Commission, Hon. Hulayat Motunrayo Omidiran, has congratulated Nigerians on the 2026 Democracy Day celebration, pledging the Commission’s continued commitment to promoting equity, justice, inclusiveness and national unity across the country.

In her Democracy Day message issued on June 12, Omidiran described June 12 as a defining moment in Nigeria’s democratic history and a reminder of the sacrifices made by patriots in the struggle for democratic governance, justice and national development. She urged Nigerians to reflect on the nation’s democratic journey and recommit themselves to the values of fairness, unity and inclusive governance.

The FCC Chairman stressed that democracy can only thrive when citizens from all parts of the country enjoy equal opportunities to participate in governance and contribute meaningfully to national development, irrespective of ethnic, religious, gender or social backgrounds.

According to her, the Federal Character Principle remains a critical constitutional mechanism for fostering national integration, social cohesion and a sense of belonging among Nigerians, while ensuring equitable representation and preventing marginalisation in public institutions.

Omidiran further assured that the Commission would continue to strengthen transparency, accountability and fairness in the discharge of its constitutional mandate, noting that inclusive governance is essential to sustaining public trust in democratic institutions.

She also commended the administration of Bola Ahmed Tinubu and its Renewed Hope Agenda, saying its emphasis on economic reforms, institutional strengthening, social inclusion and national development aligns with the Commission’s vision of building a more equitable society.

The FCC boss called on public institutions, private organisations and citizens to support policies and programmes that promote national unity, equal opportunity and sustainable development, stressing that the success of the Renewed Hope Agenda depends on collective commitment to fairness, justice and shared prosperity.
“As we celebrate Democracy Day, let us renew our faith in democracy and work together to build a nation where merit, equity and inclusiveness remain the foundation of governance,” she said, adding that unity in diversity remains key to achieving a stronger, more prosperous and globally competitive Nigeria.
