SHEIKH RUSSEL DAY: Bangladesh High Commission in Nigeria Marks His 58th Birthday.

The Bangladesh High Commission in Nigeria on marked the 58th birthday of Sheikh Russel, youngest son of Father of the Nation Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman, which was observed by the Mission on 18 October 2021 in a befitting manner.

According to a statement made available to News Dot Africa, the programme included placing flower wreath, reading out of the messages, screening of documentary on the life of Sheikh Russel, discussion meeting and special prayer.

While paying rich tributes to Shaheed Sheikh Russel, Mr. Masudur Rahman, High Commissioner mentioned that Russel was born on 18 October in 1964. Focusing on humane qualities of Russel, the High Commissioner mentioned that Sheikh Russel was a big-hearted human being, in spite of being a small boy. He had great love in his heart for general people.Highlighting the legacy of Sheikh Russel, the High Commissioner stated that the name of Sheikh Russell did not get lost in history. Several athletic organizations in Bangladesh have been named in memory of Russel, including the professional football club Sheikh Russel Krira Chakra, the Sheikh Russel School Table Tennis Tournament, the Sheikh Russel Memorial Sporting Club and the Sheikh Russel Roller Skating Complex.

A friendly football match was also held in the Lead British International School marking the Sheikh Russel Day. The match, participated by Sheikh Russel Eleven and the Lead British International School Eleven. In the keenly contested match, ‘Sheikh Russel Eleven’ beat the Lead British International School Eleven by 5-1 goals.

The event was graced by the Chief Guest, Mr. Wole Oke, Chairman of the School Management Committee and a Member of the House of Representative of Nigerian Parliament and a five-member delegation from the Nigerian Football Federation. They are, Mr. Shehu Dikko, Vice President of Nigerian Football Federation (NFF), Mr. Abdu Sule, President of the All Nigeria Football Player Union, Executive General Secretary of NFF and former member of the Super Eagle (Nigeria’s famous world cup 94 team), Mr. Chikelue Iloeuyosi, Executive President of Nigerian Football Federation and also a former member of the Super Eagle, Member of NFF and Nigeria’s former National Team Football Coach and an Office Secretary of the NFF.

The event was hosted by the LBIS School Head Mr. Abraham Ogunkanmbi, while expatriate Bangladeshi professionals, members of Indian expatriates and few Nigerian professional club officials were present. Around four hundred spectators enjoyed the match. The event ended with giving trophies and medals. The spectators were served with refreshments.

At the day-long programme moderated by Mr. Bidosh Chandra Barman, Counsellor and HOC, the guests also included the Mission officials and their family members.
