TCN Declares Force Majeure Over Birnin Kebbi–Niamey Power Line After Three Towers Collapse

The Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN) has declared Force Majeure on the 132kV Birnin Kebbi–Niamey transmission line following the collapse of three transmission towers along the route.
TCN said the incident occurred on August 26, 2026, when the transmission line tripped at about 5:38 p.m. A trial reclosure conducted at 6:03 p.m. was unsuccessful as the line tripped again immediately.
Following the incident, TCN deployed its linesmen to conduct a fault-finding patrol, during which they discovered that transmission towers T109, T110 and T111 had collapsed at Chibike Village.
According to the company, the towers were brought down by heavy rainfall and strong winds experienced in the area.
The collapse has disrupted bulk electricity transmission to Niamey, Niger Republic, through the affected transmission line.
TCN said it has mobilised personnel and resources to the affected location and commenced efforts towards the rehabilitation of the collapsed towers.
The company assured its customers in Niamey that it was deploying all necessary resources to ensure the damaged infrastructure is repaired and the transmission line restored to service as quickly as possible.
“TCN will ensure that all hands are on deck to facilitate the speedy rehabilitation of the collapsed towers and return the line to service in the shortest possible time,” the company said.
TCN expressed regret over the disruption and assured affected customers that every effort was being made to restore normal power supply promptly.
