The Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NiMet) and the Nigerian Defence Academy (NDA) are exploring strategic collaboration in meteorological training, research and capacity development to strengthen military preparedness and promote informed operational decision-making.
The Director-General and Chief Executive Officer of NiMet, Professor Charles Anosike, received the Academy Provost of the NDA, Professor B.J. Ajibuah, during a courtesy visit to the agency’s headquarters in Abuja on Thursday, October 22, 2026.
The meeting provided an opportunity for both institutions to discuss areas of mutual interest, with particular emphasis on integrating weather and climate information into military education, training and operational planning.
Discussions also centred on specialised training programmes, professional development, joint research initiatives and knowledge exchange aimed at improving the technical expertise and professional capabilities of personnel from both institutions.
As part of efforts to formalise the proposed partnership, the two organisations considered the possibility of establishing a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU). The agreement, if concluded, would provide a structured framework for sustained cooperation, identify priority areas of engagement and facilitate the implementation of mutually beneficial programmes.
The proposed partnership underscores the growing importance of meteorological intelligence in national security and strategic planning, particularly in enhancing the capacity of military personnel to understand and respond effectively to weather and climate-related challenges.
The collaboration is also expected to strengthen institutional ties between NiMet and the NDA while contributing to professional development, research advancement and Nigeria’s broader national development objectives.
