The Federal Government has commissioned a 100MVA, 132/33kV power transformer at the Walalambe Transmission Substation in Kano State to strengthen electricity transmission, improve network reliability and support industrial and commercial activities.

The Honourable Minister of Power, Mr Joseph Tegbe, inaugurated the facility on October 21, 2026, describing the project as a significant investment in expanding electricity supply infrastructure across Kano State.

The project, which features two 40MVA transformers, upgraded digital control and protection systems, and associated infrastructure, is expected to improve power transmission capacity and provide additional supply options for communities and businesses connected to the network.

Tegbe said the commissioning of the Walalambe facility would create a new electricity supply point, ease pressure on existing transmission infrastructure and provide greater flexibility in distributing available electricity to consumers.

He identified Tokarawa Industrial Area, the Eastern Bypass, Maiduguri Road, Hadejia Road and adjoining communities as areas expected to benefit from the project.

According to the minister, strengthening electricity infrastructure along these corridors would help create a more supportive environment for businesses, industrial production, investment and employment generation.

He explained that the facility would also provide alternative supply arrangements for the Mariri, Jogana, Farm Centre and Zaria Road 33/11kV injection substations, giving operators additional options for managing supply and addressing network constraints.

The minister particularly highlighted the dedicated 33kV feeder provided for Lee Group of Companies, an industrial enterprise that has operated off-grid for more than 30 years.

He said connecting the company to the national grid demonstrated the economic importance of investments in transmission infrastructure, particularly in supporting industrial operations and enabling businesses to plan for future growth.

Tegbe added that reliable electricity infrastructure remained essential to the development of productive enterprises and the creation of an enabling environment for economic expansion.

He called on host communities to protect the facility against vandalism, warning that the destruction of electricity infrastructure could disrupt commercial activities, cause working-hour losses and affect household livelihoods.

According to him, safeguarding public infrastructure requires the collective vigilance and cooperation of residents and other stakeholders.

The minister commended the Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN), the Nigerian Independent System Operator (NISO), Kano Electricity Distribution Company (KNEDC), Atlantic Engineering and Construction Co. Ltd. and the World Bank for their respective contributions to the project.

He also congratulated the Kano State Government, particularly Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf, for supporting development initiatives and maintaining a constructive partnership with stakeholders involved in infrastructure delivery.

Tegbe said the project reflected the Federal Government’s commitment to improving electricity infrastructure under President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s administration.

He noted that the facility represented an important step towards developing a transmission network capable of meeting Kano’s growing industrial and commercial electricity needs.

The minister formally commissioned the additional transformer capacity, upgraded digital control and protection systems, and associated infrastructure at the Walalambe Transmission Substation on behalf of President Tinubu.

The commissioning was attended by representatives of the Federal and Kano State governments, electricity sector agencies, engineering and construction firms, business leaders, technical partners, traditional and community leaders, and members of the media.

The Walalambe project is expected to strengthen the transmission network serving parts of Kano State, particularly industrial and commercial corridors where dependable electricity is important for economic activities.
