Abuja, June 13, 2026 — The Minister of Defence, General Christopher Gwabin Musa (Rtd), has said that Nigeria’s quest for lasting peace and stability must go beyond military operations to include efforts aimed at defeating ignorance, addressing hopelessness and strengthening democratic values.

Speaking at the June 12 Special Edition of The Platform Nigeria on Friday, General Musa stressed that true national security cannot be achieved through military force alone, noting that sustainable security is closely tied to social development, education and economic opportunities.

Delivering a presentation titled “Securing Our Nation,” the minister paid tribute to the sacrifices of those who fought for Nigeria’s democracy and underscored the importance of safeguarding democratic institutions.

According to him, meaningful economic growth and national development can only thrive in an environment where security is guaranteed.
“When we speak of national defence, the instinct is to focus on boots on the ground, air power, or intelligence gathering. But true and lasting security is anchored on one critical element: the defeat of ignorance and the conquest of hopelessness. No democracy can flourish where fear dominates daily life,” he said.

The minister highlighted achievements recorded by the Armed Forces of Nigeria in recent years, including the neutralisation of terrorist commanders and the disruption of criminal networks operating across different parts of the country.

However, he cautioned that emerging security threats continue to evolve, requiring new approaches and greater innovation in the nation’s security architecture.

General Musa noted that challenges such as banditry, kidnapping, cybercrime and transnational violent extremism have become increasingly sophisticated and interconnected. He warned that criminal groups now exploit digital technologies and social media platforms to spread misinformation, fuel divisions and undermine national cohesion.

He therefore called for a technology-driven transformation of Nigeria’s defence and security framework to effectively respond to modern threats.
The minister also emphasized the need for collaboration among government institutions, security agencies, civil society groups and citizens in building a safer and more resilient nation.

The 2026 edition of The Platform Nigeria was themed “Governance, Democracy and National Security,” bringing together policymakers, security experts and stakeholders to discuss strategies for strengthening democratic governance and national security.

General Musa’s remarks formed part of activities marking Nigeria’s Democracy Day celebration, commemorating the country’s democratic journey and the sacrifices that made civilian rule possible.
