NiMet Forecasts Continued Three Days of Widespread Thunderstorms, Advises Nigerians to Take Precautions

The Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NiMet). has forecast widespread thunderstorms and moderate rainfall across most parts of the country from Saturday, June 27, to Monday, June 29, 2026, urging Nigerians to take necessary precautions against severe weather conditions.

According to the three-day weather outlook issued by NiMet’s Central Forecast Office on Friday, northern states are expected to experience sunny conditions with patches of clouds alongside thunderstorms and moderate rainfall in several locations throughout the forecast period.

On Saturday, thunderstorms with moderate rains are expected across parts of Borno, Kebbi, Adamawa, Taraba and Kaduna states in the morning before extending across the region later in the day.

The North Central states, including the Federal Capital Territory, Nasarawa, Benue, Kogi, Niger, Plateau and Kwara, are forecast to experience thunderstorms accompanied by moderate rainfall throughout Saturday.

In the southern region, morning thunderstorms with moderate rains are expected over Ogun, Ondo, Lagos, Cross River, Akwa Ibom and Delta states, while the entire region is expected to witness thunderstorms and moderate rainfall later in the afternoon and evening.

For Sunday, NiMet predicted a cloudy atmosphere over the North Central and Southern regions, with thunderstorms and rainfall expected to intensify later in the day. Northern states, including Adamawa, Jigawa, Kaduna, Borno, Taraba, Gombe, Bauchi and Katsina, are also expected to experience thunderstorms and moderate rains.

By Monday, thunderstorms with moderate rainfall are forecast to affect the entire northern region during the afternoon and evening, while the North Central and Southern regions are expected to experience widespread rainfall, with moderate rains anticipated across the South.

NiMet warned that strong winds may precede thunderstorms in affected areas and advised members of the public to secure loose objects to prevent damage.

The agency also cautioned motorists against driving during heavy rainfall, urged residents to disconnect electrical appliances during storms, and advised people to avoid sheltering under tall trees due to the risk of falling branches.

Additionally, NiMet urged airline operators to obtain airport-specific weather reports from the agency to support safe and efficient flight operations.

The agency advised residents nationwide to remain updated with its weather forecasts and follow safety advisories throughout the three-day period.
