Nigeria Extends Condolences to Iran Over Port Explosion

The Federal Government of Nigeria has expressed its heartfelt sympathies to the Government and people of Iran following a devastating explosion at the Shahid Rajaee Port in southern Iran. The explosion, which occurred on April 26, 2025, resulted in significant loss of life and injuries.
A a press release made available to News Dot Africa by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs read in part, “Nigeria stands in solidarity with Iran during this difficult time and shares in the grief of the families who lost their loved ones in the unfortunate incident. We commend the swift response of emergency services and urge continued efforts to assist the injured and affected communities.
“Our thoughts and prayers are with the victims, their families, and the entire nation of Iran.”
About The Explosion
On 26 April 2025, an explosion and fire occurred at the Port of Shahid Rajaee near Bandar Abbas in southern Iran, killing at least 40 people and injuring over 1000 others, according to state media reports. The blast, at around 12:20 IRST, originated from several containers in the port’s wharf area, possibly containing hazardous materials or chemicals such as sodium perchlorate, a chemical used in rocket fuel. The explosion occurred amid the US-Iran talks for Iran’s ballistic missiles program.
