Nigeria and Cuba have taken a significant step to strengthen their bilateral relations by signing a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU). This agreement, signed by Nigeria’s Minister of Foreign Affairs, Amb. Yusuf Tuggar, and his Cuban counterpart, Bruno RodrÃguez Parrilla, aims to enhance diplomatic ties and deepen cooperation between the two nations.
The MoU signing was a culmination of discussions between the two ministers, who acknowledged the historical and cultural connections between Nigeria and Cuba. Amb. Tuggar highlighted the deep-rooted ties between the two countries and the black race, which dates back to the pre-colonial era. He also emphasized the shared cultural influences, particularly from the Yoruba and Itsekiri ethnic groups, which remain prominent in Cuba’s traditions, music, and religious practices.

In response, Minister RodrÃguez reaffirmed Cuba’s strong bond with Africa, especially Nigeria, and acknowledged the African heritage in Cuban society. He commended Nigeria for its stance on global issues, particularly its opposition to the long- standing U.S. embargo on Cuba.
This MoU signing is not an isolated incident. Nigeria and Cuba have been strengthening their ties in various sectors, including trade, education, healthcare, and cultural exchange. In 2023, Nigeria’s Minister of Agriculture and Food Security, Senator Abubakar Kyari, signed an MoU with Cuba on food security and agriculture advancement.
The partnership between Nigeria and Cuba is built on a foundation of shared history, culture, and values. As both nations continue to work together, we can expect to see significant advancements in various sectors, ultimately benefiting the people of both countries.
