Nigeria Congratulates Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir on Election as Bangladesh President

ABUJA, August 20, 2026 — The Federal Government of Nigeria has congratulated His Excellency Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir on his election as the 23rd President of the People’s Republic of Bangladesh.

In a statement issued on Thursday by the spokesperson of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Kimiebi Imomotimi Ebienfa, the government said the congratulatory message was conveyed on behalf of the Government and people of Nigeria by the Minister of Foreign Affairs, Ambassador Bianca Odumegwu-Ojukwu.

Alamgir was elected by the Jatiya Sangsad, Bangladesh’s Parliament, after securing 255 votes against 88 votes recorded by his opponent, Colonel (Retd.) Oli Ahmad.

The Federal Government described the election as a significant milestone in Bangladesh’s democratic and political development, noting that it was the country’s first contested presidential election in 35 years.

Nigeria commended the people and institutions of Bangladesh for the peaceful conduct of the electoral process and expressed confidence that the new president would provide responsible leadership in promoting national unity, stability, democratic governance and sustainable development.

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs noted that Nigeria and Bangladesh enjoy cordial relations based on mutual respect, shared interests and a commitment to international cooperation and multilateralism.
According to the statement, both countries, as members of the Global South, share common interests in sustainable development, economic growth, food and energy security, climate action and enhanced South-South cooperation.

Nigeria said it looks forward to working with President Alamgir and his administration to deepen bilateral relations, particularly in the areas of trade and investment, agriculture, pharmaceuticals, education, information and communications technology, healthcare, culture and people-to-people exchanges.

The Federal Government also recognised Bangladesh’s constructive engagement in regional and international affairs and reaffirmed Nigeria’s commitment to strengthening cooperation with the country through the United Nations, Organisation of Islamic Cooperation and other multilateral platforms.
“As President Alamgir assumes the highest constitutional office of the country, Nigeria wishes him wisdom, good health and success in the discharge of his responsibilities,” the statement said.

Nigeria expressed confidence that the new administration would contribute to the continued peace, stability, prosperity and development of Bangladesh.

The Federal Government once again congratulated President-elect Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir and wished the Government and people of Bangladesh continued peace, unity, stability and prosperity.
