Nigeria Commitment to Democratic Governance, National Unity- Idris

Abuja, June 5, 2026 – The Federal Government has reaffirmed its commitment to strengthening democratic governance, promoting national unity, and addressing the challenges facing the country as Nigeria prepares to mark the 27th Democracy Day anniversary on June 12.
Minister of Information and National Orientation, Mohammed Idris, stated this on Friday during a special Juma’at prayer held as part of activities commemorating Democracy Day 2026.
According to the minister, the prayer session provided an opportunity for Nigerians to seek divine guidance and support for the nation’s continued progress, peace, and stability.
He noted that while good governance remains essential to national development, the prayers, support, and active participation of citizens are equally important in sustaining democracy and fostering national cohesion.
Reflecting on Nigeria’s democratic journey, Idris paid tribute to the sacrifices of the nation’s democratic heroes, particularly Chief Moshood Kashimawo Olawale (MKO) Abiola, whose struggle and commitment to the will of the people continue to symbolize the country’s quest for democratic rule.
The minister described Democracy Day as a moment to celebrate the resilience of Nigeria’s democratic institutions and the enduring commitment of citizens to constitutional governance.
He said the country’s 27 years of uninterrupted democratic rule demonstrate the determination of Nigerians to uphold democratic values despite various challenges.
Idris stated that under the leadership of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, the Federal Government remains focused on consolidating democratic gains, strengthening institutions, and fostering unity among Nigerians.
He urged citizens to renew their commitment to peaceful coexistence, dialogue, and responsible citizenship, stressing that Nigeria’s strength lies in its diversity.
According to him, national progress depends on the collective ability of citizens to work together, reject divisive tendencies, and embrace values that promote unity and democratic development.
“As we celebrate Democracy Day, let us renew our commitment to unity, peaceful coexistence and responsible citizenship. Nigeria’s strength lies in our diversity, and our future depends on our ability to work together in the interest of our nation,” he said.
The minister expressed optimism that with sustained cooperation among citizens and government, Nigeria would continue to make progress towards greater prosperity, stability, and national development.
He also offered prayers for the country, asking God to guide national leaders, protect security personnel, and grant Nigeria enduring peace, unity, and prosperity.
