Nigeria Bags Seven Medals, Three Golds at African Taekwondo Championship in Mali

Nigeria delivered an impressive performance at the African Taekwondo Championship in Bamako, Mali, securing seven medals, including three gold, one silver, and three bronze, to underline the country’s growing dominance in the sport on the continent.

The Nigerian contingent, made up of eleven athletes and two coaches, concluded the four-day championship with a remarkable medal haul that showcased the talent and resilience of its athletes.

Nigeria’s gold medals were won by Ability Mathew Udom in the Para category, Haruna Usman in Poomsae, and Aderibigbe Faridah in Kyorugi (sparring). The team’s lone silver medal came through the combined Poomsae effort of Abdulafeez and Faridah.
Joel Jordan, Chidinma Okoko, and Salaudeen Abdulazeez contributed three bronze medals to complete Nigeria’s tally of seven medals at the continental competition.

Reacting to the team’s outstanding performance, President of the Nigeria Taekwondo Federation, Ms. Temitayo Kuburat Popoola, commended the athletes, coaches, and support personnel for representing the country with distinction.

She noted that the achievement reflects the dedication, hard work, and resilience of everyone involved, adding that the result demonstrates Nigeria’s growing strength and competitiveness in African Taekwondo.

In a statement, the President, Board Members, and Management of the Nigeria Taekwondo Federation congratulated the medal-winning athletes and technical crew for their exceptional performance, which has once again brought pride to the nation.

The Federation also expressed appreciation to the leadership of the National Sports Commission, stakeholders, and supporters whose contributions played a significant role in the team’s success.

According to the Federation, the achievement will serve as further motivation to strengthen the development of Taekwondo in Nigeria and inspire greater success in future international competitions.
