NDIC Takes Over Liquidation of 46 Revoked Microfinance Banks, Warns Against Transactions

Abuja, July 1, 2026 – The Nigeria Deposit Insurance Corporation (NDIC) has announced that it has assumed responsibility as the official liquidator of the 46 microfinance banks whose operating licences were revoked by the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN), assuring depositors that the process of reimbursing insured funds has commenced.

In a statement issued on Wednesday, the NDIC said its appointment as liquidator followed the CBN’s revocation of the banks’ licences on July 1, 2026, in line with the provisions of the Banks and Other Financial Institutions Act (BOFIA) 2020 and the NDIC Act 2023.

The Corporation declared that the affected microfinance banks are no longer authorised to carry out banking operations in Nigeria and cautioned members of the public against conducting any transactions with the defunct institutions.

It also warned that any attempt to remove, conceal, retain or tamper with the assets, records or properties of the closed banks would amount to a violation of the law and could attract legal sanctions.

According to the NDIC, it has commenced the orderly closure of the failed banks through immediate takeover, verification of depositors and payment of insured deposits to eligible customers.
“The NDIC has commenced the process of the orderly closure of the failed banks with their immediate takeover, verification and payment of insured sums to eligible depositors,” the statement said.

The Corporation assured depositors and other stakeholders that updates on the liquidation process and further steps would be communicated regularly.
The 46 affected microfinance banks are spread across several states, including Lagos, Kano, Abuja, Rivers, Abia, Ogun, Kebbi, Plateau, Kaduna, Benue, Cross River, Delta, Anambra, Ondo, Osun, Oyo, Bayelsa, Niger, Kwara and Akwa Ibom.
