INEC BOSS RE ASSURES COMMITMENT FOR CREDIBLE POLLS IN OSUN GOVERNORSHIP ELECTION

The Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), Prof. Mahmood Yakubu has re: assured its stand to ensure that the people’s votes are counted for the interest of the Osun state.

He stated this at a stakeholder’s meeting today in Osun State ahead of its governorship election.

INEC Boss said that in the interest of credibility, the commission is not ready to take any action that will discredit the electioneering process either to the advantage or disadvantage of any political party or candidate.

Mahmood stressed that the commission’s focus is to abide by the electoral processes and procedures by the law.

The Osun state governorship is considered crucial having seen as the last major off-cycle election before the 2023 General Election.

It is indeed imperative for both the INEC, political parties, and civil society organizations to enhance engagement and participation in preparation for the forthcoming general election in the country.

Speaking at the stakeholder’s meeting in Osun State, the INEC Chairman, Prof. Mahmood Yakubu appealed to the residents to come out en-mass as the choice of who becomes the next Governor depends on voters.

Noting that adequate arrangements have been made to guarantee the security and safety of voters during and after the poll.

For his part, the Inspector General of Police, Usman Baba, noted that flashpoints have been identified hence warning the electoral violators to desist or be ready to face the wrought of the security agencies.

Also speaking, his Imperial Majesty Oba Adeyeye Ogunwusi commended INEC on its commitment to delivering a credible election in the state, thus assuring of their unwavering support to achieve the desired results.

Earlier at the event, the Supervising National Commissioner, Prof. Kunle Ajayi, and the Resident Electoral Commissioner for Osun State Abdulganiy Raji said they are drawing lessons from past elections to improve upon processes and procedures, under the 2022 Electoral Act.

He noted that INEC cannot achieve the needed victory alone, even as they called on the political parties to collaborate with the commission to enhance a peaceful exercise.

The Independent National Electoral Commission is confident that all activities to ensure the successful conduct of the election have been concluded, as political parties have also been charged to adhere to the Election Act by ending all campaigns at midnight on Thursday 14th July 2022.
