As Nigerians marked the 2026 Democracy Day celebration, the President of the Veterinary Council of Nigeria, Prof. Mathew Adamu FCVSN, KSM, has reaffirmed the Council’s commitment to strengthening food security, protecting public health, and advancing national development through effective regulation of veterinary practice.
In his Democracy Day message to Nigerians on Friday, Prof. Adamu said June 12 remains a significant reminder of the nation’s democratic journey and the sacrifices made by patriots whose struggles laid the foundation for democratic governance in the country.
He noted that the occasion calls for renewed dedication to the ideals of democracy, including freedom, justice, accountability, and national unity.
According to him, the Veterinary Council of Nigeria continues to play a strategic role in national development by carrying out its statutory responsibility of regulating veterinary education and practice across the country.
He stated that through accreditation of training institutions, licensing of veterinary practitioners, enforcement of professional standards, and regulatory oversight, the Council contributes meaningfully to government efforts aimed at strengthening key sectors of the economy.
Prof. Adamu added that the Council’s interventions support food security initiatives, help prevent and control zoonotic diseases, improve livestock productivity, promote animal welfare, and facilitate safe trade in animals and animal products.
He stressed that these contributions remain essential to economic growth, employment generation, and the overall well-being of Nigerians.
The Veterinary Council President further urged citizens to continue supporting democratic institutions and embrace the values of patriotism, peace, and responsible citizenship.
He expressed optimism that collective efforts would help build a stronger livestock sector, improve public health outcomes, and drive national progress.
Prof. Adamu extended Democracy Day greetings to Nigerians and calling for sustained commitment toward building a greater Nigeria.
