LAGOS – Preparations for the maiden National Intermediate Games (NIG) 2026 received a major boost on Wednesday as Lagos State Governor, Babajide Sanwo-Olu, inaugurated the Local Organising Committee (LOC) for the sporting event scheduled to take place in Lagos in October 2026.
The inauguration ceremony was attended by the Director General of the National Sports Commission (NSC), Hon. Bukola Olopade, who had earlier led members of the committee on a courtesy visit to the governor as arrangements for the landmark competition gathered pace.
Speaking at the event, Governor Sanwo-Olu charged the committee to ensure the successful delivery of a world-class competition, emphasizing the importance of the Games as a platform for talent discovery, youth empowerment and national unity.
He noted that the National Intermediate Games would provide young athletes with an opportunity to showcase their abilities while fostering healthy competition and strengthening ties among participants from different parts of the country.
The National Intermediate Games is expected to bring together young athletes from all 36 states of the federation and the Federal Capital Territory, creating a vital pathway for identifying and nurturing future sporting champions for Nigeria.
Stakeholders have described the Games as a significant addition to the country’s sports development framework, with expectations that it will contribute to grassroots talent development and enhance Nigeria’s prospects in international sporting competitions.
With the inauguration of the Local Organising Committee, preparations have now entered a crucial phase as organisers work towards delivering a successful maiden edition of the Games in October.
