The African Centre of Meteorological Application for Development (ACMAD), has acknowledged the Nigerian Meteorological Agency’s forecast for the onset of the raining season as captured in the 2022 Seasonal Climate Prediction (SCP).

This was disclosed at their regional climate outlook forum. According to the regional body, “Projected start of the raining season over the Gulf of Guinea mostly late. This is also confirmed by a forecast from Nigeria (NiMet).” The post reads.

This affirms the SCP unveiled by the Honourable Minister of Aviation, Senator Hadi Sirika during the NiMet Seasonal Climate Prediction which took place last Tuesday 15th February, 2022.

According to the forecast, the year 2022 is predicted to be a La-Nina year, this is a continuation of the 2021 La-Nina. The La-Nina years are climatologically understood to provide conditions for normal to early onset, normal to late cessation, normal to longer than normal length of season and normal to above normal rainfall patterns in the country.””
The prediction further revealed that the earliest onset of the planting season (beginning of planting activities) is expected about the 28th February, 2022 in the Coastal parts of the country while the onset of rainfall is expected to occur between April and May in the Central states, and eventually within June to July in the Northern states. The onset of the planting season is predicted to be normal over most parts of Nigeria with a few areas having it earlier while some areas having it delayed.

This affirmative by ACMAD is worthy of note as it is an indication that NiMet is on the right track when it comes to forecast precision in the country.
