RMAFC Reaffirms Commitment to Fair Remuneration Review for Political, Public Office Holders

The Revenue Mobilisation Allocation and Fiscal Commission (RMAFC), has reaffirmed its commitment to ensuring that requests for the review of remuneration for political and public office holders receive fair consideration as part of its ongoing remuneration review exercise.

Chairman of the Commission, Dr. Mohammed Bello Shehu, OFR, gave the assurance while receiving a delegation from the Council of Retired Permanent Secretaries during a courtesy visit to the Commission’s headquarters in Abuja.

The delegation, led by the Council’s National Vice Chairman, Elder Akin Arikawe, OON, included Mallam Sabiu Zakari, Jeff Nwosu, OON, and Silas Ayuba.

Welcoming the delegation, Dr. Shehu described retired Permanent Secretaries as one of the pillars of Nigeria’s public service, commending their enduring contributions to policy formulation, governance and national development.

He stressed that their wealth of experience and institutional memory remain invaluable, noting that they continue to play an important role in shaping national policies and advising government on complex issues.

The RMAFC chairman disclosed that the Commission had concluded its review of remuneration, with many of the concerns raised by the retired Permanent Secretaries already captured in its recommendations submitted to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for consideration.

He assured the Council of the Commission’s continued support, saying the recommendations were made within its constitutional mandate to ensure retired Permanent Secretaries enjoy dignified lives after years of meritorious service.

Speaking on behalf of the Council, Elder Arikawe said the visit was aimed at strengthening collaboration with the Commission and appreciating its efforts in addressing issues affecting retired Permanent Secretaries.

He explained that the Council, guided by its motto, “Continuous Improvement,” was established to leverage the experience of retired Permanent Secretaries in providing policy advice, preserving institutional memory and supporting governance reforms.

Also speaking, Federal Commissioners representing Kwara and Kebbi States, Hon. Ismail Mohammed Agaka and Hon. Rakiya Tanko Ayuba Haruna, mni, praised members of the Council for their distinguished service, describing them as seasoned administrators whose expertise had significantly shaped Nigeria’s governance and economic policies.

They encouraged the retired Permanent Secretaries to continue mentoring younger public servants and supporting ongoing reforms in the public sector.

In his remarks, Dr. Usman Kukankada Umar, Director of the Allocation Department and Overseeing Director of the Fiscal Efficiency Department, disclosed that the Commission had commenced work on the issues presented by the Council. He said consultations were ongoing to review the relevant legal framework and address the Council’s requests in line with existing laws and the Commission’s recommendations.

The meeting ended with both parties reaffirming their commitment to sustained collaboration aimed at strengthening Nigeria’s public service, preserving institutional memory and promoting good governance.
