UK-based Nigerian athlete, Jordan Osanrenren Joel, delivered an outstanding performance at the British International Taekwondo Open, clinching victory in the heavyweight (+87kg) category and boosting Team Nigeria’s global standing.
Competing at the globally ranked tournament, which offers valuable points toward qualification for elite competitions such as the World Championships and the Olympic Games, Joel fought his way from the quarterfinals through to the finals in a series of commanding bouts.
The event featured 142 senior teams from around the world, with Joel’s triumph propelling Team Nigeria to 10th position on the overall standings—an achievement that underscores the growing impact of Nigerian athletes on the international stage.
Reacting to his victory, Joel expressed gratitude and determination to build on his success.
“I am grateful to God and my team for the win. It has shown me to continue to have faith, trust the process, and keep putting my best foot forward regardless of the challenges,” he said. “I want to do my best for my country, and this has shown me that I can win gold. I’m focused on upcoming competitions and climbing higher in the world rankings.”
Reflecting on his identity as a diaspora athlete, Joel highlighted the emotional significance of representing Nigeria abroad.
“Being a diaspora athlete allows me to stay connected to my country. It means a lot to see how representing Nigeria brings joy to my family. I’m a Naija boy and I always will be. It’s an honour to fly the flag around the world,” he added.
Joel also commended the National Sports Commission for establishing the Diaspora Talents Development Committee, describing it as a strategic initiative to unite Nigerian athletes globally.
“The diaspora initiative is a strong one that can connect Nigerians worldwide who want to represent the country but need support. It can also bridge the gap between diaspora and grassroots athletes. We all share the same goal—to see Nigerian sports flourish globally,” he noted.
The Nigerian Diaspora Talents Development Committee says Joel’s achievement reflects the immense potential within the global Nigerian sporting community and reaffirms its commitment to identifying and supporting talents across borders.
