The Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), has recorded a major breakthrough in its fight against vehicle-related crimes with the recovery of a Toyota Camry stolen since 2015, eleven years after the incident.

The recovery was made at the National Vehicle Identification Scheme (NVIS) Desk Office in Ebonyi State following a routine verification exercise on March 24, 2026.

The process began when a Motor Licensing Authority official from the Board of Internal Revenue presented documents for vehicle registration.

In line with standard procedures, the NVIS Desk Officer conducted a detailed check, which revealed inconsistencies in the vehicle’s records. Further investigation traced the car to its original owner, Mr. Adeka Emmanuel Akoji, who confirmed that the vehicle had been stolen from him in Benue State on August 13, 2015.

Acting on this intelligence, the FRSC alerted the Nigeria Police Force, prompting a coordinated operation. On March 27, 2026, at about 1:50 p.m., operatives of the Anti-Kidnapping Squad in Abakaliki successfully recovered the vehicle.

The Toyota Camry, which originally bore the registration number MKD659AG, had been re-registered with a new plate number NKE500AE in an apparent attempt to conceal its identity.

The development highlights the effectiveness of the FRSC’s National Vehicle Identification Scheme in tracking and recovering stolen vehicles. The Corps reiterated that the NVIS platform remains a vital tool for verifying vehicle ownership and strengthening national security.

Corps Marshal Shehu Mohammed commended the officers involved for their professionalism and praised the seamless collaboration with the police. He assured that the Corps would continue to deploy technology-driven strategies to combat vehicle theft and related crimes.

Motorists have been urged to ensure proper documentation and verify vehicle records through the NVIS platform before purchase or registration, as enforcement operations are being intensified nationwide.
