Nigeria’s Jessica Oji has etched her name in the nation’s sporting history after winning the women’s shot put gold medal at the 2026 World Athletics U20 Championships in Oregon, becoming the first Nigerian to claim a world title in a field event at any level.
The teenage sensation produced a championship-winning throw of 18.08 metres, capping a remarkable run of form that has established her as one of the world’s most promising young athletes.
Oji announced her arrival from the opening round, launching the shot 18.05m to take an early lead. She improved on her second attempt with a throw of 18.08m, a mark that proved unbeatable throughout the competition.
With the gold medal virtually secured before her final throw, the Nigerian star underlined her dominance by recording another outstanding effort of 18.07m, just one centimetre shy of her winning distance.
Ecuador’s Belsy Jennifer Quinonez claimed the silver medal with a best throw of 17.90m, while Germany’s Emily Scherf settled for bronze.
Oji’s victory marks a watershed moment for Nigerian athletics, breaking new ground in a discipline where the country has historically enjoyed greater success on the track and in the jumps.
Her triumph comes just weeks after an impressive outing at the 2026 Commonwealth Games in Glasgow, where she won the silver medal in the women’s shot put against senior competitors before heading to Oregon for the World U20 Championships.
The Nigerian had already signalled her title ambitions during the qualification round, where she threw 17.56m to finish first overall and advance comfortably to the final.
Oji’s historic gold medal provides another major boost for Team Nigeria’s campaign at the World Athletics U20 Championships and underscores the country’s growing strength in field events alongside its traditional sprinting excellence.
The achievement has been hailed as another significant milestone for Nigerian athletics and a promising sign for the future of the sport.
