The Renewable Energy Association of Nigeria (REAN), has commended the Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission (NERC), for its Mini-Grid Regulations 2026 and draft net-billing framework, describing the initiatives as critical steps toward expanding renewable energy access across the country.

The commendation was made during a courtesy visit by the REAN delegation to NERC headquarters in Abuja on Thursday. The delegation, led by REAN President, Ayo Ademilua, was received by NERC Commissioner for Research and Data Analytics, Dr. Fouad Animashaun.
During the meeting, REAN praised NERC for introducing policies aimed at strengthening Nigeria’s renewable energy ecosystem, particularly the updated mini-grid regulations which increased the development threshold to five megawatts and above. According to the association, the new threshold is expected to attract greater investment and support the development of larger-scale renewable energy projects nationwide.

REAN also lauded the Commission’s transparency and efficiency in processing mini-grid permit applications, noting that the improved regulatory process has enhanced investor confidence and eased operational challenges for developers in the sector.

Speaking during the engagement, NERC clarified that its primary mandate is not direct project execution but the creation of an enabling regulatory environment that encourages private sector participation and supports broader electricity access across Nigeria.

The Commission further assured REAN of sustained collaboration, with emphasis on capacity building and stakeholder engagement to accelerate the growth and adoption of renewable energy solutions in the country.

The meeting underscored the growing partnership between regulators and industry stakeholders in advancing Nigeria’s clean energy transition and improving access to sustainable electricity.
