The Director-General of the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC), Brigadier General Olakunle Nafiu, has charged Corps Members to use social media responsibly and as a tool for promoting national unity and the ideals of the scheme.
Addressing the 2026 Batch ‘A’ Stream II Corps Members deployed to the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) and Nasarawa State at their orientation camps in Kubwa and Keffi, respectively, the NYSC boss stressed the importance of maintaining neutrality, especially as they are expected to participate in the 2027 General Elections.
He cautioned that as stakeholders in the electoral process and representatives of the NYSC, Corps Members must remain completely non-partisan, noting that such conduct should also be reflected in their online engagements.
General Nafiu encouraged the Corps Members to build meaningful relationships during their service year, highlighting that such connections could yield lifelong benefits. He cited examples of prominent Nigerians who built enduring friendships during their NYSC service.
He further noted that the service year offers young graduates the opportunity to experience Nigeria’s diversity firsthand, fostering a deeper understanding and appreciation of the nation’s people and cultures.
The NYSC Director-General expressed optimism that the spirit of camaraderie, unity, and shared purpose demonstrated during camp activities would be sustained beyond the orientation period in the interest of national cohesion.
He also reminded Corps Members of their responsibility to give back to society, noting that many of them may have once benefited from the services of Corps teachers in their formative years.
On personal development, General Nafiu urged participants to take the Skills Acquisition and Entrepreneurship Development (SAED) programme seriously, describing it as a pathway to financial independence and post-service opportunities.
He also advised them to cultivate a savings culture, acknowledging that while the service year may be demanding, it remains a period of sacrifice and growth.
The NYSC helmsman encouraged Corps Members to leverage their creativity and initiative to drive impactful community development projects, building on the legacies of past participants across the country.
Earlier, the FCT Coordinator, Samson Ateli, disclosed that a total of 6,225 Corps Members had registered in the territory, while the Nasarawa State Coordinator, Hajiya Salamatu Muhammad, said 2,679 Corps Members were registered at the Keffi orientation camp, including 796 deployed to serve in the FCT.
