The National Sports Commission (NSC) has announced a lucrative performance-based reward package for Team Nigeria athletes heading to the 2026 Commonwealth Games in Glasgow, with gold medalists set to receive $3,000, silver medalists $2,000, and bronze medalists $1,500, in addition to their approved participation allowances.
The announcement was made on Friday by the Director-General of the NSC, Bukola Olopade, during the unveiling of the Commission’s official broadcast partnership for the Games at the media centre of the Moshood Abiola National Stadium in Abuja.
Olopade said the financial incentives underscore the Commission’s commitment to inspiring Nigerian athletes to deliver their best and achieve the ambitious target of winning a record 16 gold medals under the Elite Athletes Podium Performance initiative.
In a move aimed at bringing the Games closer to millions of Nigerians, the Commission also unveiled a partnership with What Network to provide free-to-air coverage of the Commonwealth Games.
According to Olopade, the initiative supports President Bola Tinubu’s vision of developing a thriving sports economy by expanding access to sporting events and creating opportunities within the sports media ecosystem.
“Our athletes deserve the support of every Nigerian. Parents and families should be able to watch their children compete on the biggest stages, while young Nigerians can also leverage sports content creation as a source of livelihood. That is the direction President Bola Tinubu wants the sports industry to take,” he said.
Chief Executive Officer of What Network, Chichi, announced that the Games would be broadcast free of charge on the Nigerian Television Authority (NTA) and TV Continental (TVC), ensuring nationwide access.
She disclosed that viewers would enjoy live coverage from the opening ceremony, competitions involving Team Nigeria, daily highlights, and comprehensive digital content on NSC TV and What Network’s YouTube platforms.
Chichi also called on media organisations to partner with the network by using official video clips and highlights to deliver timely and accurate coverage across television, digital platforms and social media.
Speaking on behalf of the athletes, Team Nigeria sprint sensation Koyinsola Ajayi and para powerlifting world champion Folashade Oluwafemiayo expressed appreciation for the Commission’s support and promised to give their all in Glasgow.
The athletes said they are determined to justify the confidence reposed in them by delivering outstanding performances and helping Nigeria achieve its most successful Commonwealth Games campaign yet.
