NiMet Predicts Three Days of Rain, Thunderstorms Across Nigeria, Issues Safety Advisory

The Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NiMet) has forecast widespread rainfall and thunderstorms across several parts of the country from Sunday, August 2, to Tuesday, August 4, 2026, urging residents to take necessary precautions against severe weather conditions.
According to the weather outlook issued by NiMet’s Central Forecast Office on Friday, northern states including Taraba, Adamawa, Borno, Zamfara, Katsina, Kaduna, Kano, Bauchi and Gombe are expected to experience thunderstorms accompanied by moderate rainfall at different periods on Sunday. Morning showers are expected in Taraba and Adamawa before the weather intensifies across more northern states later in the day.
In the North-Central region, intermittent morning rains are forecast over the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Benue, Plateau and Nasarawa, while afternoon and evening thunderstorms with moderate rainfall are expected across Benue, Kogi, FCT, Kwara, Niger, Nasarawa and Plateau.
For the Southern region, cloudy conditions will dominate, with intermittent morning rainfall expected over Ogun, Osun, the South-East and South-South states. Moderate rainfall is also forecast later in the day for Lagos, Ondo, Ogun, Osun, as well as the South-East and South-South.
On Monday, August 3, NiMet predicts thunderstorms and moderate rainfall over parts of Taraba, Adamawa, Bauchi and Gombe during the morning, extending to most parts of the northern region by afternoon and evening.
The North-Central states are expected to witness light morning showers in Benue and Nasarawa, followed by widespread thunderstorms and moderate rainfall across the region later in the day.
The Southern region is forecast to experience moderate rainfall throughout Monday, although rainfall intensity is expected to be lower in Oyo, Osun and Ekiti states.
By Tuesday, August 4, isolated thunderstorms with rainfall are expected over Adamawa and Taraba in the North, while cloudy conditions will prevail across the North-Central region.
In the South, cloudy skies are expected with light intermittent morning rainfall across the South-South states, followed by moderate rainfall over the South-East and South-South later in the day.
NiMet advised Nigerians to remain vigilant, warning that strong winds may precede thunderstorms, posing risks to lives and property.
The agency urged motorists to avoid driving during heavy rainfall, advised residents to unplug electrical appliances during storms, and cautioned against taking shelter under tall trees due to the risk of falling branches.
NiMet also called on airline operators to obtain airport-specific weather reports for flight planning and encouraged the public to stay updated with official weather forecasts and advisories.
