Commonwealth Games Update: Ogazi Makes History with Commonwealth Games 400m Gold as Team Nigeria Wins 22 Medals in Glasgow

Team Nigeria recorded another memorable outing at the 2026 Commonwealth Games in Glasgow on Saturday as Samuel Ogazi made history by becoming the first Nigerian man to win the Commonwealth Games men’s 400 metres title, while Ella Onojuvwevwo ended a 32-year medal drought in the women’s event and the men’s 4x100m relay team added a silver medal to Nigeria’s growing haul.
Ogazi produced a sensational championship performance in the men’s 400m final, running a controlled race before surging clear on the home straight to claim Nigeria’s 10th gold medal of the Games in a new Commonwealth Games record.

Trinidad and Tobago’s Jereem Richards finished second to take silver, while South Africa’s Zakithi Nene settled for bronze.

The historic victory established Ogazi as Nigeria’s first-ever male Commonwealth Games champion in the 400m and further strengthened Team Nigeria’s position on the medals table.

Moments later, Ella Onojuvwevwo delivered another outstanding performance by clocking 51.00 seconds to win the bronze medal in the women’s 400m final.

Her achievement ended a 32-year wait for a Nigerian woman to return to the Commonwealth Games podium in the event, becoming the first since Fatima Yusuf won silver in 1994.

Earlier in the day, Team Nigeria qualified for the finals of both the men’s and women’s 4x100m relays as well as the mixed 4x400m relay final.

The women’s quartet of Miracle Ezechukwu, Jennifer Chukwuka Obi, Olayinka Olajide and Prestina Ochonogor overcame a difficult baton exchange to finish second in their heat in 43.93 seconds behind Jamaica, earning automatic qualification for the final.

Nigeria’s men’s team of Chidera Ezeakor, Kayinsola Ajayi, Nicholas Fakorede and Favour Ashe also impressed by winning their heat in 38.46 seconds ahead of Canada and Australia to book a place in the final.

The strong qualifying performances translated into another podium finish in the evening session as the quartet of Favour Ashe, Kayinsola Ajayi, Alaba Akintola and Chidera Ezeakor raced to the silver medal in the men’s 4x100m relay.

The relay silver lifted Team Nigeria’s overall medal tally to 22, capping another successful day for the country’s athletes as the Glasgow 2026 Commonwealth Games entered its closing stages.

With historic individual performances, relay success and multiple podium finishes, Team Nigeria continues to underline its growing strength on the Commonwealth stage, raising hopes for an even stronger finish before the Games conclude.

According to the National Sports Commission, the latest victories reflect the athletes’ resilience, teamwork and determination, with Nigeria remaining among the leading medal-winning nations at Glasgow 2026.
