NiMet, NEMA Partner on Early Warning Systems and Disaster Preparedness
The Director General/CEO of the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA), Zubaida Umar, on Thursday paid a courtesy visit to the Director General/CEO of the Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NiMet), Charles Anosike, at the NiMet Headquarters in Abuja.
During the meeting, Mrs. Umar commended NiMet for the early release of the 2026 Seasonal Climate Prediction (SCP), the consistency of its daily weather forecasts, and the notable progress recorded under the leadership of Prof. Anosike.
She explained that the visit, which included members of the NEMA management team, was aimed at strengthening the existing collaboration between both agencies in disaster preparedness and emergency response.
Mrs. Umar also stressed the importance of integrating NiMet into the NEMA Emergency Operations Centre (EOC) to enhance coordination and improve response mechanisms to climate-related emergencies across the country.
In his remarks, Prof. Anosike appreciated the recognition of NiMet’s contributions to national development and noted that NiMet, NEMA, and the Nigeria Hydrological Services Agency (NIHSA) remain strategic partners in tackling climate-related disasters in Nigeria.
He further advocated for the development of a Nigerian Early Warning System Roadmap to be jointly designed by NiMet, NEMA, and NIHSA to strengthen inter-agency collaboration, coordination, and trust.
At the end of the meeting, both agencies agreed to immediately establish a joint committee to develop and implement the proposed Early Warning System Roadmap aimed at improving disaster preparedness and response through coordinated action and timely implementation.
