NiMet has gained capacity to give more accurate weather information for operations- Sirika

In a bid to increase efficiency and give pilots the Comfort that they need to access the most accurate weather information for their operations, the Nigerian Meteorological agency, NiMet has set up a pilot briefing room at the Nnamdi Azikiwe international airport Abuja.
Speaking at the commisioning of the briefing room in Abuja, the minister for Aviation, Sen Hadi Sirika said the innovation is part of the larger activity by NiMet to increase accessibility to timely and accurate weather information to improve operations.
“Hitherto, Pilots go through the stress of walking long distances to collect readings from NIMet so NiMet in it’s wisdom decided to narrow it down, put it in a very comfortable place for pilots to come and get their readings”.
“They put state of the art equipment there to give accurate weather information”.
According to him, NiMet has gained capacity to give more accurate weather information for operations. He added that in the past, pilots had to go all the way to NiMet office to access such information but can now obtain it in a comfortable manner with state of the art equipment.
The Minister also hinted that the FCTA technical team had just handed over the land for building the second runway at the Nnamdi Azikiwe international airport Abuja.
“the FCT Minister himself came and gave the certificates. The technical team of FCT and Ministry of Aviation sat down to discuss and earmark the area and put all necessary beacons to claim it”.
According to him, the twelve thousand hectares of land would also house the aerotropolis, MROs and cargo parks among other facilities.
Responding to a question on the relative safety enjoyed with zero crashes in civil aviation in the past 7 years he attributed it to God’s mercy, proper oversight and regulatory activities of the relevant agencies as well as training and retraining of personnel.
