The Nigerian Navy has recorded a major breakthrough in its ongoing crackdown on crude oil theft and pipeline vandalism in the Niger Delta, with the arrest of a suspected syndicate leader and his associate in Bayelsa State.
In a statement issued on April 28, 2026, the Navy disclosed that personnel of Forward Operating Base (FOB) FORMOSO carried out a targeted operation in the early hours of April 25 at Egbama-Angalabiri in Ekeramo Local Government Area.
Acting on credible intelligence, the operatives arrested a suspect identified as Mr. Godwin, popularly known as “Idiot,” who is believed to be the mastermind of a notorious pipeline vandalism network operating around the Clough Creek axis. He was reportedly apprehended at a night market where he had been extorting illegal levies from traders.
The Navy said the arrest followed sustained surveillance and intelligence gathering that confirmed the suspect’s involvement in recent attacks on oil and gas infrastructure, as well as details about his movements and hideouts.
During a subsequent raid on his residence, naval personnel encountered armed resistance from members of the syndicate. However, the situation was swiftly contained through a coordinated tactical response, forcing the attackers to retreat.
A search of the premises led to the recovery of two handheld radios and other equipment linked to illegal activities. Further intelligence obtained from the suspect resulted in the arrest of another individual, identified as Mr. Happiness, along with the recovery of a pump-action gun.
Both suspects have since been handed over to the Nigerian Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) for further investigation and possible prosecution
The Nigerian Navy reaffirmed its commitment to safeguarding the nation’s maritime domain and critical oil infrastructure, vowing to sustain aggressive operations against economic sabotage in collaboration with other security agencies.
It also issued a stern warning to criminal elements to desist from illegal activities or face decisive consequences.
