The Honourable Minister of Defence, General Christopher Gwabin Musa (Rtd), has reaffirmed the Federal Government’s commitment to strengthening the Nigerian Navy through enhanced funding, modern technology, and strategic support to safeguard the nation’s maritime domain and boost the blue economy.

General Musa made the pledge while speaking as the Special Guest of Honour at the 70th Anniversary Ceremonial Sunset Dinner and Awards Night of the Nigerian Navy in Lagos, the grand finale of a week-long celebration marking seven decades of naval service to the nation.

The Defence Minister stated that the future of the Nigerian Navy depends on its ability to harness innovation and advanced technologies, including surveillance systems, intelligence capabilities, unmanned platforms, cyber defence tools, and data-driven operations to tackle emerging security threats.

According to him, a technology-driven Navy will not only strengthen maritime domain awareness and operational effectiveness but also enhance collective security efforts in the Gulf of Guinea and beyond through stronger collaboration with regional and international partners.

He commended the Chief of the Naval Staff, officers, ratings, and civilian personnel for their professionalism, discipline, and resilience over the past 70 years, describing the Service as a model of organisational excellence.

General Musa also acknowledged the support of Nigeria’s international partners in promoting maritime security and stability, noting that such cooperation has contributed significantly to the Navy’s successes.

Highlighting the Navy’s role in economic development, the Minister said its operations have helped secure critical maritime assets, including offshore oil and gas infrastructure and major shipping routes, thereby supporting the growth of Nigeria’s blue economy.

He noted that the Service remains at the forefront of efforts to combat piracy, crude oil theft, illegal fishing, and other maritime crimes that threaten national revenue and security.

The Defence Minister further praised the Navy’s contributions to internal security operations and its support for other security agencies, stressing that such efforts have helped create a stable environment necessary for economic growth and national development.

He congratulated officers and ratings honoured during the awards ceremony, including those recognised posthumously, for their dedication, sacrifice, and commitment to duty.

“Their selfless service upholds the highest traditions of the Nigerian Navy and inspires future generations. Tonight, we celebrate not only individual accomplishments but also the collective spirit of excellence that continues to propel the Service forward,” he said.

Speaking on the significance of the Ceremonial Sunset, General Musa described it as one of the Navy’s most enduring traditions, symbolising duty, honour, and the seamless transfer of responsibility from one watch to another.

As the Nigerian Navy marks its 70th anniversary, the Minister said the Ministry of Defence joins Nigerians in celebrating the milestone and commended all naval personnel for their steadfast commitment to the security, unity, and prosperity of the country.
